Safe evacuation

WHAT ARE DIFFERENT METHODS FOR A SAFE EVACUATION?

SAFE EVACUATION IS POSSIBLE IN MULTIPLE WAYS, BUT IT SHOULD ALWAYS BE DONE IN A HUMANE WAY.
THIS MEANS THAT PEOPLE WITH REDUCED MOBILITY MUST BE EVACUATED BY USING EVACUATION EQUIPMENT.

Less visible limitations

Have you ever considered that people can have limitations that are not so visible? There are invisible risks e.g. heart problems, blind, deaf, asthma, people with autism, etc. that would have also difficulty getting to a place of safety unaided.

WHAT EMPLOYEES MUST KNOW ABOUT SAFE EVACUATION

What do people need to know to ensure an evacuation in a safe way? First of all where and how you need to take care of people. They also need to know what the emergency services are going to do. You also need rules of conduct in order to leave a building quickly and safely together with colleagues, in which the escape routes are well known. In many cases, some co-workers or employees  take on the role of coordinator, in which they can deploy existing evacuation aids. Our advice is to start the evacuation yourself and not to wait for the arrival of emergency services.

Note: evacuation equipment may only be operated by trained people.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL EVACUATION?

Safe evacuation with evacuation equipment can be carried out in two ways: sitting or lying down. You can also evacuate vertically or horizontally. The preferred method for evacuating is vertical. In this case the evacuation stairways must be used by all people inside the building. Remember: the elevator cannot be used in case of an emergency.
Horizontal evacuation means moving away from the hazardous area to a safer place on the same floor, where the person is in an alarm or emergency situation. This type of evacuation may be necessary in situations where the person cannot use exit stairs to reach the outside and must remain on a certain floor until assistance arrives.

THE FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICE IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR EVACUATING PEOPLE FROM YOUR BUILDING!

Ensure that your general emergency evacuation plan (GEEP) and your personal emergency evacuation plan (PEEP) are up to date. Emergencies by definition are sudden events and the objective is to be prepared. Are you prepared to take that risk?
